WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, Webmaster HOW TO RECOVER PLATINUM FROM CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ++++ Q. HI, I BUY, SELL AND REPAIR COMPUTERS. RECENTLY I STARTED TO SAVE ALL MY COMPUTER SCRAP TO RECOVER THE GOLD THAT IS ON THE CARDS. SO ON THE OTHER HAND I STARTED TO BUY A FEW CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AS SCRAP BECAUSE I HEARD THAT IT HAS A LITTLE AMOUNT OF PLATINUM AND PALLADIUM HONEYCOMB THAT IS INSIDE THE BODY OF THE CONVERTER. SO THE POINT IS: IF SOMEONE CAN EXPLAIN TO ME OR GUIDE ME IN THE NEXT STEP TO RECOVER THE PLATINUM_PALLADIUM ONCE THE CONVERTER IS OPEN, BECAUSE THE HONEYCOMB I THINK IS MADE OF CERAMIC. WHY I WANT TO KNOW THIS: TO PROVE TO A COUPLE OF FRIENDS THAT THE CONVERTERS HAVE A LITTLE AMOUNT OF THESE METALS. THEY THINK THAT I AM CRAZY OR NUTS. MARIO Z [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] "hobbyist" - TIJUANA , BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO ++++ A. If you want to do it just to prove your friends the point, then I agree to them. But if you're willing to make money out of it, be prepared to spend a decent amount of life and a little fortune with no guarantee of success up front. Guillermo Marrufo Monterrey, NL, Mexico +++++ A. We have the process for getting platinum (and other platinum grade metal from scrap catalytic converters). Listen to your friends. The platinum is there, but it is a very dangerous process and you have to know what you are doing. Charles K [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] - Burtonsville, Maryland wikipedia Catalytic Converter (2006) A. Catalytic converters have precious metal in them, Mario. It's those precious metals that provide the catalytic reaction: when partially burned exhaust gasses contact these red-hot metals they burn the rest of the way. So collect on the bet! :-) Recovery is rather dangerous and probably shouldn't be attempted by individuals though, and certainly not without specific training in chemistry and hazardous materials management. Good luck. WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Teds signature WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, P.E. RET WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Pine Beach, New Jersey (2006) A. Yes there is Platinum in catalytic converters. You can't recover it yourself but you have to take it a place that buys gold, metals, scraps... I buy catalytic converters, I pay good money. It depends on what kind of catalytic converter you have and if it's full, or half full. Monica M [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] - Louisville, Kentucky (2006) Q. Monica M, Can you please explain what you mean by full or half-full. Also, what different types of catalytic converters are there? Which ones are most desirable for resell to refiners? Thanks - Mark Mark W [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] - San Antonio, Texas (2007) Q. Hi I currently buy and sell catalytic converters to a man. He has often told me that he will be out of town selling these catalytic converters. My question is how much more is he getting paid and where does he take them to? Currently the best paid one I have had is one for $120.00, if anyone can help me please do so. Juan M [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] buyer/seller - Seven Springs, North Carolina (2007) A. I think Ted was kind of on the right track with his answer, but just as wrong as the rest of the responders. You will probably not find anyone willing to give up the process that they use because they use it to recover the material themselves. It would be nice if they came right out and said that so you could use your powers of internet research on chemistry to devise your own way of extracting the materials. BTW, if a person wishes to blow themselves up or poison themselves let them do it just don't take anyone else with you. Ron H [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] - Scranton, Pennsylvania ! Hi, Ron. Sure, people can sometimes be coy; but this site alone has tens of thousands of pages of people helping people, and there are tens of thousands of other sites like it. The main problem isn't coyness, but complexity and hazard. Brain surgeons and rocket scientists can be coy too, but their coyness isn't the main reason you don't find simple 1-page instructions on how to do brain surgery or build a lunar landing module :-) WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Teds signature WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, P.E. This would save shipping fees, but I'm not sure if I can just cut out the part containing the platinum, or do I have to strip it out? Georgia T [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] recycler, junk dealer - Nashville, Tennessee A. Hi, Georgia. You can cut the valuable part out from the steel. They will look a lot like a small muffler. The metal housing is stainless steel and contains no precious metal (although stainless steel has scrap value too!). The precious metal is in the ceramic honeycombs you find inside. But be careful to keep records -- because reputable recyclers will (hopefully) not buy from you unless you are convincing about their legitimacy. Best of luck! Hello, I would like to know whom I could sell the catalytic converters. I have one way to do it but it is kinda hectic. But, for the ones that want to know why they are so expensive, for an average size converter it has about 1.9 grams of platinum in the honeycomb....and do the math at 1200 dollars an ounce for platinum. Nathan H [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] - Vernon, Alabama Refining Precious Metal Wastes Recovery And Refining Of Precious Metals (2007) A. I did the math as you asked, Nathan, and came up with $80. Looking at e-bay with asking prices from about $10 to $150 for scrap catalytic convertors, it seems that developing a good "buy low / sell high" strategy is an easier way to make money than doing the dangerous chemistry yourself :-) WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Teds signature WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, P.E. I personally don't know much about it, but recovery of precious metals is a well developed industrial science, Rachel, and there are books that compare the alternative approaches and explain the chemistry in depth. P.S. SO FOR ANYONE WOULDN'T MIND SHARING SOME VALUABLE INFORMATION PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE PROCESS OF EXTRACTING THESE PRECIOUS METALS Wade Collins - ST. LOUIS, Missouri A. Hi, Wade. My expertise is in metal finishing and running a public forum website. I've never done that refining, and only vaguely understand it, but it's not secret; it's just complex to explain when starting from zero. Johnson-Matthey & Heraeus, with their half-billion dollar precious metal refineries, are no more afraid of competition from you than Boeing is. If you ask a very specific question, people will almost always answer; but if you say "tell me how to build a jetliner", it's not that people refuse to answer, it's that the only thing they can do is point you to the right aisle in the library; they simply can't distill those shelves of books on aeronautical engineering into 2 paragraphs. Recovery of precious metals is a well developed science-- start by reading one of the books that we mention here, that are readily available from any large library. Give yourself a few weeks of reading and you'll be able to do it yourself or ask specific questions that people will be able to answer. Good luck. Roberto Gremini - Belvidere, Vermont USA (2007) Q. Hi friends, I buy & sell many catalytic convertor, but I don't know the method for take out the platinum from it, if it's possible can you help me? How do we do it? Regards Jouni - France (2007) A. Since "complicated and dangerous" doesn't seem to satisfy the masses on what it takes to extract precious medals from items such as catalytic converters, I'll put it in another way. The process to do so is known as carbochlorination and the simplified textbook definition of the process is as follows: A stepwise carbochlorination--chemical vapor transport (SC--CVT) process is proposed for the rare earth extraction and separation from a mixed bastnaesite-monazite concentrate based on thermodynamic and kinetic analysis using carbon as reductant, chlorine gas as chlorination agent, SiCl4 as defluorination agent, and AlCl3 as vapor complex former. Between 500 °C and 800 °C, apparent activation energy of the carbochlorination within 2 hours changed from 22 to 16 kJ/mol roughly for the initial half hour and final 1 hour, respectively, in the absence of SiCl4; but these values reduced to 15 and 2.1 kJ/mole under 2 kPa of SiCl4 gas. The rare earth chloride yield for 2 hours was 56 to 88 mol pct in the absence of SiCl4 and 92 to 99 mol pct in the presence of SiCl4; but carbochlorination at above 1000 °C yielded a large amount of acid-insoluble residue. This, together with the negligible equilibrium vapor pressure of ThCl4 at below 600 °C, suggests that carbochlorination of the mixed concentrate at temperatures as low as 500 °C in the (Cl2 1 SiCl4) atmosphere is suitable for rare earth extraction and thorium-free volatile by-product release, which is different from the conventional Goldschmidt process at 1000 °C to 1200 °C. The CVT reaction of the carbochlorination product was performed at 800 °C for 0.5 hours in the (Cl2 1 SiCl4 1 AlCl3) atmosphere and then at 1000 °C for 6 hours in the (Cl2 1 AlCl3) atmosphere along different temperature gradients, leading to complete thorium removal and efficient rare earth separation, respectively. Their combination allows an efficient and environmentally conscious extraction and separation of rare earth elements from the mixed concentrate. Here it's a lot different as first, scrap yards that send them to the States need to remove the dust from 'em which is a process in itself. So places like Sims Metal will buy your Cat's but from memory there's only 2 or 3 grades, like small, medium & large, and the prices are quite low as they take into account the need to remove the dust and ship 'em to the States. Although hooking up with Sims on an account type system will give you better prices then retail level Catalytic converters, when cleaned are worth anywhere from $5 each to over $200 each! I'd first try Sims Metal and talk to them about grading, mixed cat's will go for less so it might pay to seperate into their grades. Let us know how you get on. TheBullionDesk Bloomberg.com: Africa Platinum, Rhodium May Slump as Output Gains, Credit Suisse Says By Antony Sguazzin June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Platinum and rhodium prices may plunge by 2015 as South African miners expand too rapidly, Credit Suisse Standard Securities said. Platinum will probably peak at an average $2,348 an ounce in 2011 and reach $1,500 in 2015, David Davis, a Johannesburg- based analyst, said in a note to clients dated June 13. Rhodium will fall to $5,500 an ounce by 2015 from a 2009 peak of $9,000, he said, adding that earnings from the metals will also slide. ``It is highly likely that both platinum and rhodium will go into a significant oversupply,'' Davis said. ``A significant downturn in platinum and rhodium prices between 2010 and 2015 will be a shock to the industry.'' I would speak freely about where u store your cats as I had over 20 units stolen of me when one guy come around claiming he buys cats when we agreed on price , he claimed he didn't have all the funds on him and would come back later , and the next day the cats were gone which he did come back later and helped himself. SO be careful who yopu show them too , unless they have the funds in hand don't show them where u keep them. cheers Last edited by GTS1963; 21-06-2008 at 11:48 AM. Catalytic Converters are collected by Dismantlers, wrecking yards, muffler shops and other collectors usually when they have reach what is known “End of Life” or the end of their usefulness. Some come from newer cars that have been in an accident. These tend to end up at a dismantler or salvage yard. then they are sold off just like many other parts of the vehicle. The three reasons to Buy & Sell Scrap Catalytic Converters Or should we say, “Your three Best friends” Selling by the Unit Selling or Buying by the unit usually involves using something called a “Category Price List”. Many people have made and lost plenty of money using this list. You may want to use it, you may not. Why? Let’s talk about it. Selling by the Code Buying and Selling by the “Code” is a much more accurate way to determine the true value of the converter. Many Buyers do not like it for two reasons, (1) Many would prefer to stay with the old “Category price list” and continue to play the pricing “Shell game” with sellers, and (2) They don’t have access to “Code” prices, so they cannot compete very well without know ing the true value. Well, we have the “Codes”. Let’s talk about it more. Know the Code, Know the price. Code Search What our customers are saying. We work with APB & Associates. It has been a very good experience and excellent Business Relationship that gives us the opportunity to be more competitive both in price and knowledge of the converter business. Also, their payment terms are very flexible and it helps us a lot in order to buy the units. Another point that we are very happy about working with APB is, that they have many locations to deliver the material so you don’t have to pay too much in freight. All the people that I have had the opportunity to talk and work with at APB & Associates, have been very friendly and professional. So, that is the kind of company that you want to do business with for a long time. Mr. B We though we were selling the right way before. Now we are making more in less time and without the hassle of “knowing all the categories” . We used to have to be all up to date on the different categories to make sure that the many buyers that would come through would be paying the correct price. APB change all that for us. Now, we just put the Catalytic Converters we remove from the cars, count them and put them in a big box. APB picks them up and we get paid on the recycling. It frees up my people to do others tasks. So, we make better use of our time and we get paid a very good rate of return. We trust APB and they haven’t proven that wrong. Thank you. Mr. P The knowledge that Scrap Catalytic Converter .com and APB & Associates helped us with has made our business grow. You can tell that they have been around for a long time because it shows in their depth of information. We like that they share information that allows us to make more money. For instance, they told us the difference of Torpedos and Bread loafs and Flows. Wow! What a difference some knowledge makes! Also, you don’t run across a lot of honest people in this business, but, These guys are something different! We will definitely work with them for a long, long time. We are the #1 catalytic converter recycling company in the U.S. As with any mechanical device, catalytic converters will go bad. Because of the composition of catalytic converters, we recycle them for their precious metals content. Platinum, palladium and rhodium exist in trace amounts. Recycling catalytic converters is a intensive procedure, but definitely a boost to the environment. If your catalytic converter goes bad, you can earn a substantial amount of money by contacting us. We have many years of experience. In addition to putting some extra dollars in your pocket, you are helping the environment. Although catalytic converters are relatively simple devices, it is amazing to see how positive an impact they have on the environment. MARIO Z [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] "hobbyist" - TIJUANA , BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO (2004) A. If you want to do it just to prove your friends the point, then I agree to them. But if you're willing to make money out of it, be prepared to spend a decent amount of life and a little fortune with no guarantee of success up front. Guillermo Marrufo Monterrey, NL, Mexico (2005) A. RET WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Pine Beach, New Jersey (2007) Q. I have access to hundreds of catalytic converters, and want to know how to extract, not refine, the platinum from them. WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Teds signature WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, P.E. RET WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Pine Beach, New Jersey (2007) Q. RET WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Pine Beach, New Jersey (2007) Q. I work in a lab and need to produce platinum from a catalytic converter on a small and safe scale, What is the best way of doing this? Rachael C [last name deleted for privacy by Editor] work in a glass lab - Rotherham, South Yorkshire, UK (2007) A. I personally don't know much about it, but recovery of precious metals is a well developed industrial science, Rachel, and there are books that compare the alternative approaches and explain the chemistry in depth. Read the great reviews of Ammen's book => If you can provide a little more detail on what you are trying to do, you will probably get better targeted and therefore more helpful answers. Thanks! MY NAME IS WADE COLLINS AND I WAS TRYING TO FIND THIS PROCESS OUT MYSELF, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT NO ONE WANTS TO GIVE THIS VALUABLE INFORMATION UP IN FEAR OF OTHER PEOPLE MAKING THE KIND OF MONEY THEY'RE MAKING, I MEAN REGARDLESS OF IF IT'S A DANGEROUS PROCESS OR NOT IT'S OUR OWN DECISION IF WE WANT TO GO THROUGH WITH IT OR NOT, I MEAN THERE ARE A LOT OF DANGEROUS THINGS OUT HERE, ALCOHOL FOR ONE IS A DANGEROUS PROCESS IN EVERY WAY BUT PEOPLE NEVER DENIED US THE PROCESS OF CONSUMING IT AS WELL AS DRUGS, WORKING IN ASBESTOS AREAS, AND OTHER FOREIGN ILLNESSES, THAT WE DON'T EVEN ASK FOR, BUT TO DENY THE PEOPLE TO MAKE MONEY WHETHER YOU BELIEVE OR NOT TO BE DANGEROUS IS OUR DECISION IF WE WANT TO DO IT. Good luck. RET WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Pine Beach, New Jersey January 11, 2011 thumbsup2LOL Just acquired a foreclosed estate property with acreage and found a mountain of converters waaaayyyy back in the woods under tarps. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what this guy was keeping them for and why he was hiding them so far from the road. Stumbled on this thread and now I know. Q. If you can't understand that then you're out of luck. there is no simpler, step by step method of doing this. Cory Gage - Tulsa, Oklahoma (2007) thumbsdownThe reason these [expletive deleted] don't want to give you the info is cause of the loss of money they would be hit with. The high value cat's get 2 to 300 dollars that hold up to 2 ounces of platinum in them. Notice you caught the eye of so many on here trying to buy yours instead of showing how you can recover 2 ounces of platinum. Now 1 ounce goes for what 1300 dollars. I wouldn't show you how to recover it either! Zachary Rumble - Lawton, Oklahoma (2007) Cory just finished taking the time to give you the 'secret' info, Zachary. But me, you, and most others don't yet have the background knowledge to understand his instructions. Any large library will have books on recovering platinum and precious metals; people may need to study those books before they understand Cory's instructions. I bought a replacement catalytic converter from Meineke for under $150. OEM models for larger cars have more platinum but $2600 didn't sounded believable. So I spent some time on line looking for the world's most expensive catalytic converter and the highest price I could find was $2495 for a pair for a Ferrari, Yes, the precious metals are indeed valuable ... but maybe the real issue is that there are people who want to sell scrap at ridiculous prices by exaggerating its value while implying that recovery is easy? WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Teds signature WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM, P.E. RET WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM Pine Beach, New Jersey (2007) I am a buyer of scrap catalytic converters. The process you ask about is very hard and dangerous. It is a process that is regulated under EPA standards. It is profitable to sell the converter as a whole unit. You can refine or have them refined in other countries if you want to gather up 3000 of them and wait 90 days on your money to come back to you. My web site buys on average 2500 catalytic converters a month. I have tried it all and to refine a converter yourself is totally crazy. There is 3 acids in the process and it becomes very explosive and at times it does explode. The proper automated machines keep the workers safe when this happens. There are several platinum groups in most converters. A large gm I pay 100.00 for it on my web site. A aftermarket converter is not worth what a factory converter is. It will only net you 10.00 as scrap. Some large converters I pay 140.00 for them and some exotic converters go higher than that, 200.00 or so. Before you find all there is to refining your own think about the people around you and the laws of the land. Steven Gee - Hornsby, Tennessee (2007) I agree with Mr. Mooney's last post. It is impossible to recover $200 in metals value from a product that RETAILS for less than $200! Now, I do believe that finding silver/gold/Pt/Pd and other precious metals in a refinable form is still do-able at flea-markets, garage and estate sales and thrift stores - with enough time and patience. They, like others, have become much more sophisticated, so, likely they tested and 'high-graded' anything before it went out for sale. Garage sales at private residences (NOT conducted by professional estate or auction services) remain the best candidates. Bruce A Ades - Carrollton, Texas October 2, 2014 thumbsup2Cory and Ted. Like if this Guide is helpful Share 7 January 2010 I've read many articles steering people away from buying and selling scrap converters, but the truth of the matter is, there's still so much money to be made from this occupation. The bottom line is, the one that's the most creative will eventually succeed in this field. Identifying converters, I will admit, can take some time doing, but still can be done in a short amout of time. There are only 3 types of converters, After markets/universals, wrap foil, and ceramic honeycomb, that's it, just 3. Only half of the scrap converters in the U.S. makes it to the refiners, leaving the remainder laying somewhere in scrap heaps or left on vehicles prepared to be crushed. Im sure you can find guides selling on ebay, that would help you to identify these converters, but the truth of the matter is, converters are like computer software, they constantly change, and new styles hit the market about every six months, and now these universals are getting so sofisticated, that they are starting to look like OEM. Honestly, I'm glad it changes so much, it keeps the game fresh. I like to think of it as a bucking horse, either stay on or fall off! I've been buying converters for over 13 years and have trained a lot of my family to buy. Now 13 years is not to say that it takes 13 or more years to master this, to be quite frank, it only takes a few months. I've bought many converter guides, just to see if I was missing anything only to be disappointed, most of these guides cost no more than $20-$30 bucks, a pretty cheap price on something that could make you thousands and in some cases millions. I should have known looking at the prices, that the information contained in these guides would fall short of my expectations. I came across a guide recently that peaked my curiosity, for one, the price caught my attention, around $70-$80 bucks, boasting 350 pics with descriptions such as year, make and model, which have never been done before. I thought, if this is true, this will blow the lid off, and add more competiton in the field. Well stay tune, I should be recieving it soon, and will get back with some comments. My topic will be the name of the book "scrap catalytic converter buying and selling guide". SO be careful who yopu show them too , unless they have the funds in hand don't show them where u keep them. cheers Last edited: Jun 21, 2008 WWW.RECYCLECATS.COM...-melb-vn-calias-whole-swag-parts-cheap-5.html F/S ( Melb ) VN Calais front/rear seats plus door trims 4 Sale - ( Melb ) - VN Commodre V6 calias cluster F/S ( Melb ) VN calias + a whole swag of parts cheap GTS1963, Jun 21, 2008 #5 Nov 13, 2016 #6 blackve76 blackve76 Member Messages: 672 Likes Received: 7 Trophy Points: 18 Joined: Feb 9, 2013 Location: there Members Ride: VE SS ute 360rwkw N/A, 2016 VF2 SS M6 Yep a thread mine from yrs ago but doing shed clean up and found 6 old cats 2 from VE SS, 2 from VE V6 and 2 from VF series 2. So, instead of tossing them out, recycle them! cars.jpg During the Great Recession articles started popping up about people stealing catalytic converters from cars. While this may seem like a pretty strange crime, there was a real reason thieves targeted this small device inside a car’s exhaust system. Catalytic converters contain a range of precious metals and can fetch hundreds of dollars on the black market. The fact that they contain valuable metals means catalytic converters are great candidates for recycling. But do not rush to pull yours out when you go to sell or scrap your car. The easiest way to recycle one is to leave it in the car and left the experts recycle it. It is not easy to remove the precious metals from a catalytic converter, just as it is not easy to pull the tiny bits of gold from a circuit board. If you happen to have a catalytic converter at home because you work on cars, we have some tips on how to recycle them. Several companies allow you to mail in your catalytic converter in exchange for cash. What is a catalytic converter? An article on HowStuffWorks.com explains a catalytic converter uses a set of catalysts to convert some of the dangerous gases produced by your car into benign substances. Platinum and palladium, both rare precious metals, are brushed onto a honeycomb-shaped matrix inside the catalytic converter. When exhaust flows by it, the metals convert things like carbon monoxide and smog-producing hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. Catalytic converts contain several other metals, including copper, nickel, cerium, iron and manganese. Small amounts of rhodium are also found within a catalytic converter. Rhodium, like platinum and palladium, is very rare and valuable. These three metals can be used for jewelry, electronics and industrial purposes. Your car’s catalytic converter should last as long as your car. However, if you notice your car is backfiring, using more fuel than usual, or that the “check engine” is coming on, it is possible the catalytic converter has failed. A mechanic can replace it, but with all those precious metals on its interior, it will not be cheap. Catalytic converters were originally invented for factories rather than cars. According to Catalytic Converters, a French engineer named Eugene Houdry invented the first catalytic converter in the 1950s. His goal was to decrease the amount of pollution being belched out by smokestacks. Catalytic converters did not originally work very well in cars because the lead in gasoline would coat the catalysts and render them useless. When lead in gas was outlawed, and people became more concerned about automobile pollution causing smog and acid rain, catalytic converters became more common on cars. Why should you recycle a catalytic converter? Mining anything has negative effects on the earth, but precious metal extraction is particularly hard on the planet. Brilliant Earth, a company that sells jewelry made with recycled metals, describes several of the downsides to mining platinum. Platinum ore is pulled out of tunnels that are very energy-intensive to dig. It takes one ton of ore to produce one ounce of platinum, and all that ore must be treated with chemicals to get the platinum out. The process of refining platinum from its raw form into the metal we recognize is extremely polluting. Platinum miners are typically paid very low wages and work in very dangerous conditions. By recycling your catalytic converter, you limit the need to mine platinum and other precious metals. This is a big win for the environment. How to recycle a catalytic converter in a car In most cases, the easiest way to recycle a catalytic converter is to take your entire car to an automotive recycler. Scrap metal dealers or car scrap yards are the most likely candidates to take your old car off your hands. Any large or medium-sized community should have at least one scrap metal dealer and car scrap yard. If you want to make certain your car gets recycled in the most eco-friendly manner possible, look for a car recycling service like Green Vehicle DIsposal. It has a network of auto recycling companies in the United States and Canada. All their partners pick up used cars and break them down for disposal. It can even pay you for your used car in most cases. Visit the company’s website for more details about its program. How to recycle a catalytic converter If you happen to have a catalytic converter you want to recycle at home, there are places that can take them. WWW.RECYCLECATS.COMRecycling in New Jersey runs a program called Catalytic Control that pays people for their catalytic converters. It accepts them through the mail, so you can recycle your catalytic converter no matter where you live. Check out its website for a price list and information about what types of catalytic converters it accept. WWW.RECYCLECATS.COMand Auto Core are two additional businesses that pay people for old catalytic converters. Their websites have more information about how to obtain a quote and ship your converter to them. You may be tempted to try and pull out the precious metals yourself, but this is not advisable. The process of extracting these metals is complicated and dangerous. Even if you were able to remove the platinum, palladium, rhodium and other metals, the amount you would have on hand would be so small it would hardly be worth selling them. What You Need To Know About Catalytic Converter Scrap Prices What You Need To Know About Scrap Steel Prices Where To Find Scrap Metal What You Need To Know About Catalytic Converter Scrap Prices Catalytic converters are devices that can be found in the exhaust systems of many vehicles. This device helps to convert the harmful pollutants that a vehicle generates when in use into ones that are not as harmful. It works by creating what is called a “redox reaction” within the exhaust to change carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. With platinum or palladium on the inside of the catalytic converter, it is easily the most valuable item that can be scrapped on the average vehicle. The technology behind the catalytic converter was invented by a French engineer named Eugene Houdry, who moved to the USA in 1930. He received his first patent for this technology in the 1950s, but it wouldn’t be until the US government moved to regulate fuel efficiencies and emissions that the technology would become widely available. What Are Catalytic Converter Prices in the USA? Most scrap yards that will take catalytic converters are generally going to offer you a price based on an entire car that is being scrapped. You do have the option to remove the catalytic converter on your own to scrap just this piece of a car as well. To get the best price, you’ll need to turn in the full unit. If it is missing any part of its core, then it may be paid at a rate that is 25-75% of the going rate. Catalytic converters that are completely hollow are paid at scrap steel rates. The catalytic converter price will then be based on the platinum, rhodium, and palladium trading prices that are available on that given day. These are considered to be precious metals, so the trading on them is more volatile than other scrap metals you’ll be able to find. Here are the average prices to consider, but always check of the current spot price. Platinum: $986 per ounce Palladium: $620 per ounce Rhodium: $800 per ounce You’ll often find a scrap car price that includes catalytic converter recycling may add $125 or more to the overall price of the junk vehicle. This may or may not be the best way to get a good price from the unit. It all depends on what precious metals are contained within the catalytic converter. The best option to scrap this unit might be to open it up, remove the precious metals, and scrap them instead. A Quick Note: Catalytic converters outside of the United States may be composed of different metals, so knowing where the scrap originated is important. Outside of North America, catalytic converters tend to have copper in them. Iron, manganese, cerium, and nickel are also metal options in certain regions in the world. Since 2013, these precious metals have been slowly declining in value. If you have a catalytic converter to be scrapped, right now might be the best time to act before prices dip even further and your scrap becomes less valuable. Where To Find Catalytic Converters Auto manufacturers in the United States have been equipping catalytic converters to vehicles since 1975. The American autos were the first to use this item on almost all vehicles made, so older foreign vehicles from this era might not have one. Later models offer two-way or three-way conversions to help reduce pollutants and may have more precious metals contained within them. If you don’t have a catalytic converter on your vehicle, there are some other places where you can find them available for scrap. Forklifts are often equipped with units, as our buses, trucks, and even train engines. Some motorcycles that are only good for scrap may also have a catalytic converter. Any vehicles made in 1974 or before, however, will not generally have a unit installed on them unless it was custom added later on. Some electrical generators have also been known to be equipped with a catalytic converter to help reduce pollutants that are released. You’ll find scrap catalytic converters around mining equipment and sometimes in homes that have a wood stove because they help to control emissions that occur during the burning process. How To Get the Best Prices For a Catalytic Converter Scrap catalytic converter prices are dependent on the trace amounts of precious metals that are contained within the unit. To get the best possible price, you’ll need to know how much of each precious metal your particular unit contains. It is also important to note that the recycling process for catalytic converters can be a very intensive process, so unless you can strip out the metals yourself, the best bet is to turn your unit into an auto scrapper. You’ll want to avoid scrap yards that offer one generic price for all catalytic converters – unless the generic price is better than your make and model price, that is. You’ll also need to know whether or not your catalytic converter is a factory model or an aftermarket model. Factory units always command a better price because there is a documented percentage of each precious metal that the catalytic converter contains from the manufacturer. If your local scrap yard is not an auto salvage yard, you might actually receive a better overall price for your catalytic converter. You’ll have to bring the unit to them to get paid, however, and that may not always be possible depending on the condition of the vehicle or processing unit that has a catalytic converter. Always call ahead to make sure your scrap yard will take full or half units and what price you can expect, then compare that quote to other local yards and regional rates found online to know if you’re getting the best price. Most catalytic converters tend to be worth about $100 on any given day. Larger units are not always worth more because the pricing is based on the actual metals contained within the unit. Foreign units tend to have more of the precious metals in them, so they tend to be worth the most. Ford catalytic converters tend to have the least amount, so you may find them priced in the $40 range at some scrap yards. What Are the Traps To Avoid When Scrapping a Catalytic Converter? The primary issue that you’ll need to watch out for when scrapping a catalytic converter is a scrap yard telling you that you’ve got an aftermarket part. An aftermarket catalytic converter may be worth as little as $4. If you’ve got a large foreign unit that has over $100 worth of value, that’s a huge profit margin to be giving up. Aftermarket units are usually stamped as such, so you’ll be able to tell them apart. Auto manufacturers also tend to label their parts as being genuine in some way. Another ploy that is sometimes used is to base the quoted price on the lowest precious metal that the catalytic converter contains, which is typically platinum in the US. With more than $200 per ounce in difference, even a trace amount of palladium or rhodium can bring in several extra dollars when scrapping one of these units. Sometimes another method used to reduce the amount paid for catalytic converters is to discuss the outside rust and corrosion that is typically seen on vehicular units. The outer casing is steel and has no bearing on the interior components whatsoever. What Catalytic Converters Will Sell and What Will Not Sell You can always sell the interior components of a catalytic converter. Even if it is just loose material, you can receive $4-$6 per pound on most days with where these precious metals tend to trade. What will not sell are the outside components and casing of the unit itself. If a catalytic converter is completely hollow, then you’ll only receive a generic bulk ferrous rate for your scrap metal. Your best option here depends on what you’re trying to recycle. If you have a junk vehicle that is just taking up space in your yard, trying to remove the catalytic converter to recycle it independently may not be worth the work it takes to get it. If you receive a fair price for the vehicle from your local scrapper and they’ll haul it away for you, then it may be better to just take that deal. If you have access to a bulk amount of precious metals from these converters, then you may wish to bypass the scrap yard completely. There are bulk suppliers who will offer a lower premium for the metals in each unit because more of them are being processed at once. The best catalytic converter scrap prices come from the actual amount of precious metals each unit contains. For American vehicles, General Motors tends to offer units that have the best value. Jeep and Chrysler also have high value units. Foreign vehicles sold in the US, however, almost always have the best scrap potential. Follow this guide, get a fair price, and you’ll have plenty of money coming your way. Copyright © 2016. All rights reserved. All new cars today are equipped with catalytic converters for significant reduction of harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).lysis, providing vital information at that precise moment and not weeks later. Certain chemical reactions in an automotive catalytic converter transfer the harmful substances into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and nitrogen (N). To optimize and speed up these reactions, catalyst elements such as the three platinum group metals (PGM) Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd) and Rhodium (Rh) are used in the converters. DELTA DELTA handheld X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzers provide convenient, easy, on-the-spot measurements of automotive catalysts with high precision and accuracy within 1 - 2 minutes excellent analytical performance close to the wet chemistry results Benefits: rapid identification of worthless monoliths (unloaded or washed-out) rapid sorting of catalysts converters of different value levels for the recovery of the precious metals Pt, Rh and Pd precise PGM concentration in minutes for price calculation The DELTA XRF analyzer also provides high quality results for additional catalyst metals such as Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Bi, Sr, Zr, W, Se and Ce. Every new vehicle is outfitted with a new type of catalyst. Consequently, each year several hundred different types of catalysts are produced resulting in a great variation in the PGM loadings. Recycling of Automotive catalysts for the recovery of Pt, Pd and Rh helps saving the natural resources, reduces costs required for traditional mining techniques and saves the environment. Catalytic converter scrap also has a much higher content of Pt, Pd and Rh than ores. The recoveries of Pt, Pd and Rh from used automotive catalysts will also satisfy the demand for the new production. The proportion of recycled PGM in the production of new catalyst converters is constantly increasing. Hundreds of users all over the world – from collector to refiner – have confidence in the reliability of the DELTA handheld XRF analyzer to monitor incoming or outgoing materials. With 40 - 60 thousand different types of catalytic converters on the market identifying and calculating its value only by part numbers or shapes is not practical. Therefore fast and reliable analytical methods for accurate analysis are critical for the daily business for QC, sorting, and price evaluation for buying and selling.
